It seems that inspiration has never been a challenge for Karl Lagerfeld. For the Summer 2011 collection, he drew inspiration from the iconic 1960s film Last Year at Marienbad. Interestingly, it was Coco Chanel herself who designed the costumes for the film’s female characters, and decades later, that cinematic legacy became the theme for an entire runway collection—timeless, elegant, and deeply rooted in fashion history.
The setting was absolutely breathtaking. The runway was transformed into a striking black-and-white garden, which many said closely resembled the one featured in Last Year at Marienbad. I must confess, I haven’t seen the movie myself, but the atmosphere alone was enough to convey its surreal and poetic essence.
The collection was rich in texture and detail, featuring an abundance of lace and chiffon, distressed elements, subtle degradés, and delicate florals. Every piece felt thoughtful and refined, yet powerful—exactly the kind of designs that make women feel like modern, confident princesses.
While all fashion week shows are undoubtedly fabulous and inspiring, Chanel consistently goes above and beyond. There is something about the house’s ability to blend heritage with innovation that sets it apart. Each show feels like a complete experience, leaving the audience not just impressed, but truly in a state of fashion ecstasy.
