The name Santorini dates from the thirteenth century, and it is a contraction of the name Santa Irini (or Saint Irene). Before that, the island was named Kallístē (the most beautiful one), Strongýlē (the circular one), and Thēra. By the nineteenth century, Thēra came back as the official name of the island and its main city, but the Santorini is still the one used regularly. Santorini is one of the two locations in Europe to have a hot desert climate. Over there, you will generally have two seasons. April to October is the warm and dry season while the cold and rainy season goes from November to March, I enjoyed four days on the island in July and let me tell you…I loved it!  Let me show you…

Arrival –  Took a Ferry and arrived in Fira, where a driver was waiting to take us to Oia

Oia –  It was previously known as Apano Meria, which means upper side. And let me tell you, what a beautiful side!! The place is divine. Once again we rented a house through Airbnb, and I could not be happier.

The Sunset – gets even better with this breathtaking view complemented by good wine and appetizers…

…and while many come “upstairs” to enjoy the sun go down, we were able to see it from the Jacuzzi

The Island – There are so many beaches to enjoy!  Perissa Beach, Amoudi Bay, Red Beach, along with the excavation site of Akrotiri, another  historic attraction.  We rented a Jeep, best choice ever!

Akrotiri – The site is covered, has A/C, and you can see everything at your own pace. I read at TripAdvisor that someone bought a guide book,  and that was of real help. But anyway, it is amazing to see the level of sophistication in the lifestyle of ancient Aegean. You will not be disappointed!

Red Beach – it is close by the Akrotiri, and it was one of my favorites as I said before 🙂

Perissa Beach – Is one of the best in Santorini. With coarse black volcanic sand, it offers plenty of sunbeds that you can rent, or if you feel like eating, order a meal at one of the restaurants and you will enjoy your sunbed for free.

Amoudi Bay – 250 stairs, to get in and out of Amoudi, but the walk is worth it! The water is excellent, exquisite restaurants, and fabulous view! Be careful with donkey poop, and enjoy the place early, before crowds get there.
